Sgt. Woods Interview
What inspired you to become a police officer?
My wrestling coach when I was in 8th grade. He was called up to the Marines during the first Gulf War and he was also a police officer. He inspired me to join the Marines and eventually become a police officer. We’re still friends to this day.
How long have you served with the department?
I start my 23rd year in July.
Did you have another career or job before law enforcement?
Yes. I was in the Marine Corps for 4 years after high school and a union laborer for 5 years before I became a police officer.
What advice would you give young people interested in law enforcement?
The military is a good launching point for law enforcement, and stay out of trouble. Social media can come back to hurt people later.
What’s one safety tip you wish everyone knew?
Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Being focused on your phone all the time can get you in trouble.
What qualities make a great officer?
A good listener and someone who doesn’t like to quit.
What does serving this community mean to you?
If something bad happens, send me. I want to be here to protect this community. One of my core values is that if we can’t protect the most vulnerable (kids and elderly), we are nothing more than a bully with a gun.
What’s one misconception about police officers you’d like to clear up?
That we have quotas for tickets—we do not. And we don’t all eat donuts. I prefer bagels and cream cheese.
What motivates you to keep doing this work?
I hate to lose.
What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?
Lifting weights, hunting, and fishing.
Coffee or energy drinks?
All of the above.
Dogs or cats?
Cats, I have three cats.
Favorite sports team?
I don’t like sports.
If you weren’t a police officer, what would you be doing?
Probably an iron worker.
What’s one item you always keep in your patrol bag?
A CPR mask and a flashlight.
Early bird or night owl?
I just never sleep.
Favorite snack on shift?
Sour patch kids.
Mountains or beach?
Beach.
Favorite holiday?
Opening day of deer season.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
10% of life is what happens to you... 90% is how you react.... attitude is everything,
