Jane Doe: Case Overview
On December 12, 2014, preserved human remains were discovered off Mason Road in Economy Borough, launching one of the region’s most unusual and haunting investigations. Found down an embankment in a wooded area along a quiet two-lane road, the remains were located near residential homes yet close to major transportation routes.
Since that discovery, the Economy Borough Police Department has maintained this as an active, ongoing investigation. Our team has collaborated with forensic experts, genealogists, and partner agencies to identify the victim, determine the circumstances of her arrival, and establish if a crime occurred. Despite extensive efforts and national outreach, her identity remains unknown.

Full Case Narrative
On the afternoon of December 12, 2014, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a routine walk along Mason Road in Economy Borough resulted in a discovery that would initiate one of the region’s most significant investigations — human remains located just beyond the roadside.
Mason Road is a quiet, two-lane rural stretch bordered by wooded areas and private residences. While secluded in character, the location is accessible via major thoroughfares, including Interstate 79, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and Route 65. The remains were found approximately 31 feet from the roadway, down an embankment. Initial forensic assessment indicated the remains had been present at the site for a period between one week and one month prior to discovery.
Forensic examination revealed several highly unusual details. The head had been surgically separated from the body with significant precision regarding the trachea, carotid arteries, and spinal cord; however, the surrounding skin exhibited irregular, crude margins inconsistent with professional surgical practice. Furthermore, the eyes had been removed and replaced with red rubber balls, held in place by standard embalming eye caps.
The Beaver County Coroner confirmed the remains had undergone professional embalming, suggesting they were once prepared for a funeral setting. However, the use of red rubber balls is not a recognized practice within standard mortuary science. The remains were definitively ruled out as belonging to a medical cadaver.
Analysis indicates the victim was a female between the ages of 60 and 80, with styled, whitish-grey curly hair and well-maintained dental work. Dental materials used in her fillings point to treatments performed during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Despite national outreach to funeral directors, the release of forensic sketches, and entry into databases such as ViCAP, her identity remains unknown.
The investigation has pursued all available leads, including cadaver dog searches, toxicology, and isotope analysis. Isotope testing suggests the individual may have resided in or traveled through regions including Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and New York in the months preceding her death. While multiple DNA extraction attempts through specialized labs have been unsuccessful to date, the investigation remain active.
Identifying this individual is the critical first step in understanding her origin and the circumstances surrounding her death. More recently, renewed public interest following national media coverage has generated new leads, all of which are being meticulously reviewed by investigators.
We continue to seek the one piece of information that will unlock this case. Someone, somewhere, knows her name.
